Pearl and Ronda: Revaluing mothers’ literate lives to imagine new relationships between homes and elementary schools

Whitmore, K. & Norton-Meier, L. (2008. Pearl and Ronda: Revaluing mothers’ literate lives to imagine new relationships between homes and elementary schools. Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, 51(6), 450-461.

We’re told two interesting stories of moms who might have been seen as “at-risk” due to their past relationships with school, but who, through personal strengths, determination, and “funds of knowledge,” forged bridges between their homes and their children’s elementary schools.

These two case studies are of two extraordinary women, it is certain. They are not the “typical” parent. Still, they and their stories urge us to look more deeply at parents, “revalue” them as literate individuals and “wise and contributing members of the academic and intellectual cultures” of schools. After all, schooling is a collaborative effort, and we need all the funds of knowledge we can tap into to do that important and challenging job.

I know several “Rondas,” but really found myself wanting to meet and know “Pearl.” How many Rondas and Pearls are out there, just needing an invitation?
